lifting Mom...and her spirits, too

12-Volt lift • Weight: 14 Lbs • Lift Height: 9 Ft
There was little time for the DeGennaro family to wait for someone else to solve their problem. Ed's mother wanted to return to Georgia in the last months of her struggle against ALS, a disease that had ravaged her nervous system. She was a heavy person and was immobilized by muscle weakness, spasticity, atrophy and a great deal of anxiety. Thus, it would have been impractical and physically stressful to move her commercially by plane, bus, or train. So they set out to acquire and modify a motor home.

In the RV world, "handicap access" was discovered to be a simplistic concept, mostly referring to getting in and out of a vehicle. But once inside, there was no effective way of moving her from one end to the other because of the narrow passageways.

A world-wide search for a lightweight and durable system turned up nothing. Ed and his father Rio did, however, find enough components to create a safe and compact design of their own. They found a style of track to which they attached a geared motor and pulley by which they were able to smoothly lift 300 lbs.

Mrs. DeGennaro got to see her birthplace after all, and a lot more of the United States before she succumbed to Lou Gerhig's disease a few short months later.

The original track and lift system worked so well it would attract attention at every RV park or service station they stopped at. As they listened to scores of stories similar to that of their initiation to the concept of barrier-free living, it became evident there were many other families in need of a lift and transfer device.

In answer to that need, Ed devoted all his energy and financial assets to refining and producing a model for commercial distribution. He called it the Mobil-Eze Lift System.

Today's version consists of four basic components: track, trolley, lift motor with pulley, and sling. The track is made of 6061 T-6 extruded aluminum; powder coated to protect it from corrosion. The trolley is extremely tough and capable of going around a one foot radius curve. Hanging from the trolley is a lift motor specially designed for Mobil-Eze to handle heavy loads without jerking or back sliding. An attractive high-impact ABS plastic enclosure protects the power pack and drive mechanisms. Washable nylon slings are configured to the specific needs of the user.

The compact and light construction of the Mobil-Eze lift and sling provides for quick and easy interchange between home and RV. Roof accommodations for track attachment provide additional strength and rigidity to the vehicle or house.

Facilities managers at schools, hospitals, care facilities, offices like the system because it's easy to install, it's inexpensive compared to tearing out walls and doors, and it reduces lifting injuries to care givers as well as patients.

When Ed and his father solved their problem, they opened up another path to freedom for thousands of disabled people and their care-givers.

Gladys Holzschuh of Canton, Ohio, a typical Mobil-Eze customer, wrote, "...you have made it possible for us to have our freedom again without depending on someone else. It's just wonderful."
